AUSTIN (KXAN) — Experts are predicting this year’s mosquito season to be worse than usual despite the harsh winter and ongoing drought. The recent round of heavy rain is helping to jumpstart breeding and hatching season for the blood-sucking insects.

“We’ve had a lot of rain lately,” said Mosquito Squad owner Karyn Brown, “but Texas is sort of a mosquito haven anyway and we have mosquitoes here that don’t bite just dusk and dawn, but bite all throughout the day.”

But, she says, it’s not just large buckets of water or standing puddles that are breeding grounds for the flying vampires.

“I think its a myth that mosquitoes need a lot of water in order to reproduce,” she explained. “And actually they only need a tiny bit of water. A cap full of water can breed hundreds of mosquitoes.”

Karin says a few simple tips can help you get rid of mosquitoes:

  • Keep lawn mowed and gutters clean
  • Pay attention to places where water can collect in children’s yard toys
  • Remove leaf piles
  • Empty any standing water around your property

“There may be tiny reservoirs of water that are leading to hundreds of mosquitoes in your yard,” said Brown.

And getting rid of that water, she said, is the first step towards ridding yourself of mosquitoes. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
