Copper thieves strike popular Austin shopping center

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Thieves hit a popular Southwest Austin shopping center, but this time, they were not targeting the cash register.

The crooks stole copper lines connected to air conditioners from some businesses in The Shops at Arbor Trails, at MoPac and William Cannon Drive.

The thieves targeted at least one of the buildings in the shopping center, home to multiple businesses. The stolen copper was taken from the roof, prompting property managers to alert their tenants.

“I got a notice from the landlord saying a couple of people in Building B may or may not have had some copper taken off the roof, mainly off the AC units,” said Trevor MacKellar, the owner of Healthy Pet.

MacKellar says he doesn’t have time to worry about the air conditioning malfunctioning.

“You know, it’s taking time out of my day to figure out what happened upstairs, essentially on the roof,” he said. “(It’s) taking away from my day to day business.”

He climbed up on the roof directly above his business and check for anything that looked suspicious, but he didn’t see anything that looked out of the ordinary. However, MacKellar says one of his AC units isn’t working properly, and any repairs could take their toll.

“It’s going to take money out of our pocket where we could utilize it for other things. It’s just unfortunate that something like this would happen,” said MacKellar. “And, obviously we can’t afford to have no AC in this heat.”

MacKellar says about six months ago, a similar copper theft crime was reported from the Whole Foods in the shopping center. The property manager is encouraging all the tenants to notify police of any concerns.
