LOCKHART, Texas (KXAN) — A 3-year-old girl was found dead after going missing along Plum Creek just north of Lockhart in Caldwell County Tuesday night.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office said crews were sent to the 1400 block of Rolling Ridge Drive after someone called 911 saying a 3-year-old was missing for about five minutes and possibly drowned.  The caller also said there was a 5-year-old boy clinging onto a tree in the water.

The sheriff’s office said the boy was rescued by a neighbor and is okay physically.

The creek was flooded when the girl was reported missing Tuesday around 5 p.m., County Emergency Manager Martin Ritchey tells KXAN News. Her body was pulled from the area about 11 p.m.

“It’s heartbreaking as we understand. Everyone understands children. It is a sad moment for everyone, however, we have a job to do and we brought her home,” said Ritchey.

Deputies and firefighters looking for the girl worked through stormy weather that passed over the area during their search for about six hours.

The girl’s father was behind bars for driving on a suspended license when he found out about his daughter’s death. He was released from custody this morning.

Caldwell County Sheriff Daniel C. Law tells KXAN News that an autopsy will be performed on the girl’s body. State law requires an autopsy be performed following the death of any child under 10-years old.

All findings of the sheriff’s investigation will be sent to the District Attorney’s office for review. At this point, Law said, the drowning is being investigated as an accident.
