AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Fire Department crews battled a heavy fire in an attic on Saddleridge Cove sparked by lightning in Northwest Austin.

The fire broke out at 5109 Saddleridge Cove, where a neighbor heard the lightning hit and ran outside to see the smoke coming from the attic.

There were no injuries in the fire, which caused heavy fire damage to the attic and water damage to the second floor.

Total damage was estimated at $85,000 — $75,000 in structure damage and $10,000 in damage to contents.

Lightning caused a second fire that AFD responded to on Pinehurst Drive in South Austin. Lightning hit a tree, which sparked a small fire on the house.

The lightning that caused the fire is part of the storm that moved east across the region that caused interruptions to several Memorial Day events. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
