Shoppers save sales tax on energy efficient appliances

AUSTIN (KXAN) — If you are looking to replace your appliances, Memorial Day weekend may be the time to do it.

The state’s Energy Star tax holiday allows shoppers to save the 8% sales tax and purchase appliances that could help them save money in the long run.

“We’ve seen a pretty huge increase in the traffic,” Stephen Smiles with Best Buy said. “…People just coming in taking a look at some of the great deals we’ve got going on and wanting to save some money with the Energy Star savings and stuff like that.”

Eligible items include air conditioners, refrigerators, ceiling fans, fluorescent light bulbs and washers. However, not all appliances qualify for the tax break. They must have the Energy Star logo on them.
