AUSTIN (KXAN) — Barton Springs Pool is expecting hundreds of visitors over the Memorial Day weekend, but be prepared, not everything is open to the public.
Construction at the pool started last last October and isn’t quite finished yet and parts of the pool are still closed. The south lawn is also roped off as workers replace the sod.
For the last seven months workers have been putting in new equipment and updating resources. They are installing a new irrigation system and the parking lots are getting new pavement. There will also be a new ADA path that’s more accessible.
Different parts of the pool have been closed throughout the process including the main entrance. Visitors have to use a special entrance on the side.
The city says these improvements are necessary for both the environment and safety of those using the pool.
“There’s more than 750,000 visitors that attend here and we need to keep it safe and add extra space,” said Robin Camp with the City of Austin. “The south lawn will also have more room.”
“On Memorial Day weekend you’d expect a park like this to be ready for traffic and lots of people,” said Amanda Austin, who was visiting from San Jose, California. “But if it means more grass and area to lay out I think people will come.”
City officials say most of the construction should be wrapped up by June 6. However, the south parking lot won’t open back up until the end of June.
