AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin City Council could vote Thursday for a plan that will set a vision for Burnet Road.
The area between 45th Street and U.S. Highway 183 has seen major growth over the last few years, and now the city wants to envision what the area will need years from now.
If council members approve the resolution the city’s Development and Review Department will start asking business and property owners about what is needed along this corridor.
Starting in the fall MetroRapid buses will also start running along this road, potentially bringing more people to the area.
The idea is to create a self-contained city neighborhood.
“We would like to create complete communities where people can meet all of their daily needs within a short walk, bike ride, transit ride, or car ride,” said Carol Haywood, with the City of Austin Development and Review Department.
In about a year when the study on Burnet Road is complete they will turn to the surrounding neighborhoods to see what their needs are.
Then it’s a matter of working with the Capital Planning Office to get funding.
“We will try to get all of these projects into the cycle of the five year capital improvement program. So things do not change overnight it takes years and years,” said Haywood.
