DEL VALLE, Texas (KXAN) — A man has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after police say he shot the driver of a car he was riding in, court documents show.
A Travis County deputy noticed a jeep parked off the roadway in the 14800 block of Hokanson Road on May 8 with its lights on and the driver’s side door open. The officer found John Butts inside the vehicle covered in blood and suffering from a gunshot wound to the face, according to the affidavit.
A sawed off shotgun was found on the floorboard next to the driver’s seat and one spent round was discovered, according to police.
In a written statement Butts told police he was giving Travis Wayne Turner, 25, a ride and the gun was Turner’s.
The affidavit says Butts, 38, informed two relatives that Turner shot him.
Due to his injuries Butts could only communicate with police through writing. He told officers he did not shoot himself but was reluctant to name Turner as the shooter, the document said.
Bond was set at $40,000 for Turner. He has not yet been arrested according to the sheriff’s office.
