iWatch app offers new way to reach authorities

AUSTIN (KXAN) — People in Central Texas have a new tool to keep their neighborhoods safe.

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday unveiled ‘iWatch Travis County.’

It’s a new app that allows you to make anonymous police reports. The app is free for you, but it cost the county $8,000. The sheriff’s office says it was paid for out of money seized from criminals.

The Travis County Sheriff says this is not a replacement for 911 and that you should still call in an emergency.

Similar systems in Dallas and Houston have gotten some negative reviews for bugs in the app. Developers say updates should solve those problems.

iWatch also operates in parts of Ohio and Florida.
