Persistent student graduates after 20 years

AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Thursday evening an Austin Community College student fulfilled a dream 20 years in the making.

Anne Arellano picked up her diploma for a degree she started working on 20 years ago.

“Everybody has a dream,” Arellano said. “Life can either take you toward the dream or away from the dream. But, you always have it.”

Arellano enrolled at ACC after high school, but had to leave after her father was diagnosed with cancer.

She enrolled again but a foster child she was raising had to be hospitalized and she withdrew again.

Over time Arellano and her husband have fostered and adopted four children and she has become a mentor for other foster parents in the area.

Her family was all there to cheer her on Thursday night.

Arellano already has a nursing job lined up for her future.
