El Paso state rep. released from jail after DWI case

Texas State Rep. Naomi Gonzalez D-El Paso

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A West Texas legislator has been released from jail after serving less than half of her 15-day sentence over a DWI wreck in Austin.

Travis County jail records show State Rep. Naomi Gonzalez of El Paso was freed Thursday after being incarcerated since May 2.

Sheriff’s spokesman Roger Wade says Gonzalez received a day of custody credit from her original arrest, plus credit for good behavior while in jail.

Gonzalez was sentenced to 15 days after pleading no contest to drunken driving in a March 2013 traffic accident involving two vehicles and a bicyclist. Gonzalez, the other driver and the cyclist all sustained minor injuries.

Investigators say Gonzalez had a blood alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit for driving.

Democrat Gonzalez failed in her 2014 re-election bid.
