A South Austin crash Friday morning left two people dead and another person in the hospital with critical life-threatening injuries.

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A 17-year-old was behind the wheel of the car involved in Friday’s deadly crash along Barton Hills Road, Austin Police confirmed Monday.

Alyssa Hefley was killed in the crash, police said. Authorities also confirmed Andrew Newton, 18, was in the backseat of the car and was killed during the crash.

The second passenger, 18-year-old Cliff Kinkade, is in University Medical Center Brackenridge following the crash. His father said Cliff was in a medically-induced coma in the intensive care unit Friday, suffering from broken ribs, a swollen brain and a collapsed lung.

KXAN News learned Friday the occupants in the Honda were students at Austin High School. His classmates gathered in the high school theater on Saturday to bring flowers and candles for those who were killed and said prayers for Cliff Kinkade

The crash happened around 11 a.m. at the intersection of Barton Hills and Foxglen drives in the Barton Hills neighborhood just south of Zilker Park. After the initial investigation, authorities confirmed the teens were traveling southbound on Barton Hills Drive when the 2003 Honda Accord veered off the roadway and crashed into a tree on someone’s lawn. They’ve also confirmed they were all wearing seat belts and both front airbags inflated. Detectives are still trying to determine whether alcohol or a mobile device played a factor in the crash.

Neighbors showed KXAN security camera video of the car traveling at a high rate of speed shortly before it crashed.
