Texas state rep. to do jail time for DWI

Texas State Rep. Naomi Gonzalez D-El Paso

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Rep. Naomi Gonzalez, D-El Paso, will serve 15 days at the Travis County Jail for a drunk driving conviction.

Gonzalez was arrested during 2013’s legislative session after she failed to stop and hit a cyclist. The cyclist was in the hospital for a brief amount of time. Gonzalez was returning from an evening reception.

She released a statement on Friday, following her sentencing on Thursday:

“I sincerely apologize to the others involved in this accident for the pain and disruption to their lives. I am sorry that my thoughtless actions have negatively impacted them and their families. I ask that one day they can find it in their hearts to forgive me. I also ask for forgiveness from all of those – including my family and my community – who have been hurt by this. That was never my intention. I profoundly regret it and I will carry this regret for the rest of my life. I accept the sentence of the Court, once completed, I will take the next steps in completing my term of office. I am thankful for the prayers and support I have received over these past difficult months. I will never forget it.”

Gonzalez lost her seat in the March primary but will continue to serve out her term, which ends January.
