DEL VALLE, Texas (KXAN) — A Del Valle Elementary School student is facing disciplinary action after bringing an unloaded 9 mm gun to school on Tuesday morning, the principal said.
A teacher quickly confiscated the weapon after it was found in a student’s backpack and authorities were notified.
An investigation into the incident is underway and Del Valle ISD officials say Austin police are handling the criminal aspect of the inquiry. Authorities believe the student was showing the gun off to friends.
“This is a very serious violation of the student code of conduct and the law, which we will abide by for disciplinary action,” Del Valle Elementary School Principal Bertha Hernandez said in a letter to parents. ” I commend the teacher for the quick action taken and for helping to ensure the safety of our campus.”
Hernandez also used the situation to remind parents of the importance of keeping weapons hidden when children are in the home. It is illegal for an adult to make a firearm accessible to a child.
