Chief Acevedo: City must act to prevent deaths

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin’s police chief is calling for harsher punishment for people caught driving drunk and pushing the city to provide more options to prevent drunk drivers in lieu of the city’s latest in a series of deadly accidents.

“If you look around Austin, Texas and you see how many people are killing people drunk driving they get probation and slaps on the wrist,” Chief Art Acevedo said. “Enough is enough. We need justice when people make those choices and kill and maim our neighbors and friends.”

In a brief news conference Monday evening, Acevedo said he wanted to see more taxis in Austin and more public transportation options. He also said he would like to see more public parking that let people leave their cars parked overnight if someone’s had too much to drink.

Chief Acevedo is calling for a summit where city leaders can discuss these and other ideas.
