Teen’s death on Lake Travis reminder of dangers on open water

LAKE TRAVIS, Texas (KXAN) — A teenager from Lago Vista was killed Saturday after his canoe flipped on Lake Travis.

Antonio Louchart, 16, was a student at Lago Vista High School.

The teen’s death was a reminder of the dangers of being out on the water.

Hearing about the deadly canoe accident in one of Lauren Rodriguez’s favorite spots was difficult.

“It’s an area that I’m at nearly every single day,” she said, who works with Viking Ship Kayak Rentals in Lago Vista. “It’s a place for our locals to go, it’s where I take my kids, it’s very devastating.

Rodriguez said there are plenty of hazards people need to be aware of all over the lake.

“Boats coming by, jet skis coming by, different things that make wakes,” she said. “Also wind can make some pretty decent waves or push out your farther than
you intended to go out.”

Her kayaks are equipped with safety vests and whistles but she says she can only do so much to protect her customer

“Take a little bit of time and practice if you’re struggling a little bit,” said Rodriguez. “Stay near the shore stay where you’re visible safety is the number one concern.”

Texas Parks and Wildlife says there are anywhere from 30 to 50 drowning deaths each year in Texas on open waters.
