Officer: Car forced ‘me to jump out of the way’

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin police officer is recalling the moments when a car passed into the scene of a death investigation this weekend, coming close to officers.

Police were investigating the death of 33-year-old Kelly Noel Saturday morning.

Police say Kelly stepped into the road near East Eighth Street and the Interstate 35 frontage road. Investigators say Wade Atwood was driving and hit Kelly.

Atwood admitted he had been drinking and his blood-alcohol level was just over the legal limit, according to police. He was arrested on scene and has since been released from jail.

After that, another suspected impaired driver crossed onto the scene.

“I was standing right in front of the vehicle and it came directly at me, forcing me to jump out of the way,” said Officer Joshua Muchnikoff. “I think I got (out) of the way within about 10 feet, five to 10 feet. I was already moving as soon as he accelerated. It looked like he came within a couple feet of other officers when he kept going.”

Ramiro Sosa was charged with driving while intoxicated.

It highlights the dangers for police on the roads.

In 1995, a drunk driver also hit and killed Austin Police Officer Drew Bolin on I-35. He was directing traffic.

Muchnikoff has a simple message after this weekend.

“Be conscious of where you’re driving and it’s always going to be cheaper to take a cab if you’ve been drinking,” Muchnikoff said.
