AUSTIN (KXAN) — Several dozen Austin firefighters were rewarded Saturday night for their work over the last year.
More than 100 firefighters received awards, including the Medal of Valor. It is the second highest award AFD can present to firefighters and is given to those who show outstanding courage and bravery on the job.
“It’s the fire department’s time to give back to its firefighters,” said Palmer Buck, AFD Battalion Chief. “Our firefighters love the job they do, but this awards ceremony does.. it makes it special for some of the things.. they’re accomplishments over the last year.”
Many of the firefighters received awards for heroic work after the floods on Halloween 2013. Firefighters rescued more than 380 people during those floods.
Civilians in the department were also recognized for their service.
