Police arrest man they say burglarized South Austin home twice

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A burglar who was caught on camera stealing a car from a South Austin home last week has been arrested, according to police.

According to court records, Sean McNerthney, 28, was apprehended on Tuesday when an officer patrolling the Rundberg area came across the stolen Honda Civic.

The vehicle was parked in the driveway of a home in the 9000 block of East Drive, which is a location that is suspected of drug sales.

When the officer ran the license plate on the car, it came back to a stolen license plate. According to police, suspects will put stolen license plates on stolen vehicles.

When McNerthney got in the car to leave, the officer followed him but the suspect stopped the car, jumped out and ran into a  backyard, according to the arrest affidavit.

Officers were able to find him hiding underneath a house a short time later.

McNerthney is accused of breaking into a home on Gaines Mill Lane at the end of March. Last week, the Durand family said the suspect that broke into their home came back and stole their car with the spare key he stole from the original burglary.

McNerthney has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, but more charges could be pending.

McNerthney is no stranger to the Travis County jail. In Dec. 2012, he was arrested for making counterfeit money.
