AUSTIN (KXAN) — A University of Texas Football player is asking for Longhorn fans to help save his mother’s life.

Junior linebacker Dalton Santos took to Twitter after finding out Thursday his mother needs open heart surgery. He asked for his followers to help raise money for the surgery.

“It kind of breaks me up inside to see how many people really care, and that what I do on Saturday really makes a difference,” Santos said. “Just reading the comment on there, they’re coming from everywhere. Ten-year-old kids donating their $25 allowances. I mean, I know how hard it was when I was 10. It’s just unbelievable. “

Vista Santos is a nurse and a single mother of three. Dalton is her oldest. She is also uninsured.

In just a few days strangers have donated more than $36,000.

Doctors have told Vista Santos she needs to have the surgery as soon as possible.

Compliance officials at the University of Texas say what Santos is doing is within NCAA rules.
