LAKEWAY, Texas (KXAN) — A family is searching for their dog after they sent her to the kennel but never got her back.
It happened at the White Angel Animal Hospital in Lakeway. That’s where hospital staff say the dog escaped.
“Panic, panic,” Deirdre Brueggen said of her initial response to hearing the dog was missing. “I was stuck in Chicago and there was nothing I could do.”
Brueggen says she dropped off her son’s dog, Pebbles, to be boarded on April 17 before heading on vacation. It was the next morning when she got a text from the owner.
“She sent me a text message saying that my dog had bit Jordan, the technician, and (Pebbles) had gotten away,” said Brueggen.
Brueggen says the hospital told her they were searching for Pebbles, but Brueggen, an animal care professional herself, says it’s what they said next that alarmed her.
“I was told that this is an unfortunate thing, and that this just happens,” said Brueggen. “In my 15 years experience this has never happened to me.”
Managers at White Angel say their facility is safe for dogs but Pebbles was aggressive and bit their employee.
“Pebbles was able to get away because she attacked the person that was handling her,” said Tal Shohamy, business manager at White Angel Animal Hospital. “We tried to find Pebbles and after an hour and a half we found her. She wouldn’t come to us and ran away again.”
Shohamy says he doesn’t recall if any other dogs have ever run away.
But for Brueggen, all that matters now is finding Pebbles. “It’s even more traumatizing to have to explain this to a 5-year-old who has been praying daily.”
