AUSTIN (KXAN) — A person at McCallum High School who was believed to have tuberculosis has officially tested positive for TB, according to the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department (HHSD).

In early April, students and staff at McCallum High School received notification that a person at the school possibly had tuberculosis.

While the district can’t say whether the patient is a student or a staff member, the patient has stayed away from the school since becoming aware of their illness and is currently undergoing treatment.

When it was determined that the patient did have TB, the HHSD decided to test 170 faculty, staff and students at McCallum High.

“At this time, no new exposures have emerged,” said Carole Barasch, a spokesperson for HHSD. “We will conduct a second round of tests with the same group next month.”

Parents and teachers who have any concerns should call HHSD at 512-972-5460. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
