Capital Metro narrows down Plaza Saltillo plans

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new mixed-use development in East Austin will bring some big changes to the area. Capital Metro is now narrowing down the designs for their Plaza Saltillo Station.

Capital Metro chose four final different concepts on Monday and their next step is to choose a winning design.

The new development will span an 11-acre area that currently sits mostly empty. Capital Metro says they’re planning a major hub for Austinites to enjoy with the goal of also increasing their ridership.

Some of the plans include adding an entertainment area, places for shopping and eating, and more than 500 new apartments.

Capital Metro officials could pick a final design as soon as their next board meeting on May 19. After the design is chosen a final completion date will be set.

But Kat Decker, who has lived in East Austin for nearly 13 years, say she hopes some things also stay the same.

“I love the flavor and the feel it traditionally has,” she said, “so we kind of want to keep that.”

Decker is the owner of SpraTX, an art gallery and street art group. They spray paint murals across Austin for the community to enjoy.

“When people drive by and see one of the bumble bees or characters it really does do something to make them smile,” Decker said.

East Austin residents like Decker are hoping the new design doesn’t leave one important aspect out.

“Anyone who loves our flavor, we’d love to give it to them,” she said.

Capital Metro says they want the community’s input on the plans. They are holding a public hearing on April 25 at their headquarters in East Austin. An open house will take place on May 19, but a location has not yet been set.
