High-speed chase ends in North Austin crash

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A high-speed chase hitting speeds as high as 115 mph in downtown Austin and along I-35 ended in a crash in North Austin.  Police believe the car involved was stolen.

Sgt. Dustin Lee with the Austin Police Department said an officer tried to pull over the silver Toyota car at 3:40 a.m. on Interstate 35 heading north near Woodward St., but the woman driving the car sped off through downtown and North Austin.

Police stopped chasing the car when they reached Austin’s city limits and turned off their lights, on orders from their commanders.   They said they did this because of evaluating the situation and safety concerns for other people on the road.

However, a few minutes later they saw the driver crash into another car on the I-35 service road at Wells Branch Parkway.

Police said a woman in her 30s was driving the stolen car, and she was taken to a Round Rock hospital for neck and back pain. The driver of the second car was shaken up but not hurt.

Meanwhile, crews have cleared the scene, and all roads are open.
