Storm-scared pets end up in animal shelter

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The bolts of lightning and claps of thunder didn’t just scare people in Austin on Monday. It also riled up some pooches.

The Austin Animal Center says they took in more than 70 dogs. Many appear to be owned pets, not strays.

Anyone who lost their dog is asked to check the organization’s Facebook page and Twitter account. Volunteers snapped photos of many of the dogs waiting to go home.

The dogs ended up at the Animal Center on Levander Loop in East Austin.

The shelter will not charge pet owners who pick up their animals. The center will also give out free identification tags, collars, and microchips.

“It is days like today that an I.D. tag and microchip is critical for the safety of pets,” said Abigail Smith, Chief Animal Services Officer. “Nine out of 10 dogs that have come in have collars but no tag. So we know they have owners that we hope are looking for them.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
