Officer uses stun gun on student after fight breaks out at Stony Point

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — A 16-year-old student at Stony Point High School was immobilized with a stun gun after a fight broke out in the cafeteria, Round Rock police said.

When a school resource officer approached the fight, about 7-10 student were a part of the melee. Round Rock Police Cmdr. Jim Stuart said the fight was mainly between two people.

One of the students trying to break up the fight had one of the ‘combatants’ in a bear hug, Stuart said. When the officer told him to back up, the student complied and let the the combatant go, police said.

The student then “balled up his fists and it appears he was going to fight the officer,” Stuart said. The officer deployed his Taser, hitting the student in the lower back, according to Stuart. However, video sent to KXAN appeared to show the student grabbing his stomach after being hit.

The student was taken to the hospital to have the prongs removed, but he was not seriously injured, Stuart said. He was released into the custody of his brother.

Stuart said the officer has been with the Round Rock Police Department for more than 10 years and added this was the first time an RRPD officer had deployed a Taser in the school.

An investigation will be conducted by the police department to determined whether or not to press charges against the 16-year-old.

The two main individuals involved in the fight will be disciplined by the school, Stuart said.
