Margo Manhattan robber steals $54K from ‘jeweler to the stars’

NEW YORK (CNN/WCBS) — A robber targeted a New York jewelry store that caters to big stars, including Beyoncé.

“She buzzed him in, yes,” said jewelry store owner Margo Manhattan. “She clicked him in and thought after, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t have let this guy in.’”

A 53-year-old manager of jeweler-to-the-stars Margo Manhattan was choked, assaulted, thrown to the ground, and tied up while a thug posing as a customer ransacked the store.

“He grabbed her in a headhold and pushed her down,” said Margo. “I think he tied her hands behind her back.”

On the walls — just feet from the crook – were photos of Beyoncé in a Margo Manhattan necklace and other stars posing in her jewelry: Selena Gomez, Kate Winslet and Alexa Ray Joel.

The crook appeared to be looking for these pieces for 20 minutes. Brazenly and defiantly, he grabbed dozens of precious items from the safe and even stepped on his victim’s back to steal her purse, cash and credit cards as she lay shaking on the floor fearing for her life.

“He took a necklace that I did for Beyoncé, for one of her videos,” said Margo. “He also got a whole bunch of interlocking heart rings I did for Selena Gomez. He got a bunch out of the safe, you know, 18K white gold, probably diamonds, and amethyst, and a big, chunky bracelet.”

However, the criminal had no way out and nearly became violent again, until another employee happened to return.

“My other production manager came back, and she clicked open the door,” said Margo. “And he ran out because there was no other way for him to get out.”

The man got away with about $54,000 worth of jewelry. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
