Carstarphen officially named new superintendent in Atlanta

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Former Austin Independent School District superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen was officially named to the same position in Atlanta on Monday. Her first day will be July 7, 2014.

“AISD is on a solid path,” Carstarphen said in a statement. ” Together, we have ensured the district has built strong momentum and support for the expansion of social and emotional learning to every school, realized a dramatic decrease in disciplinary referrals for African-American and special education students, and achieved an all-time high graduation rate of 82.5 percent.

“I am proud of the progress AISD has made during my tenure, and confident that it will continue in the years ahead.”

The new job will come with a big pay raise for Carstarphen. Her three-year contract to watch over the district with an enrollment of approximately 47,000 students will have a base salary of $375,000 . Her current salary at AISD is $283,412, where she oversees more than 85,000 students.

Carstarphen joined AISD in July 2009. She said previously that she would work with the AISD Board of Trustees to develop a successful transition plan.

Carstarphen was born and raised in Selma, Ala., and said she has a personal draw to Atlanta.

“As a daughter of the Deep South, I look forward to joining the Atlanta community and helping to rebuild Atlanta Public Schools. But, I will miss Austin.”

The school board is expected to name Dr. Paul Cruz as the district’s interim superintendent on Tuesday.
