AUSTIN (KXAN) — Dr. Paul Cruz will soon be in charge of the Austin Independent School District.
Cruz, 48, was appointed as interim superintendent during a special board meeting Tuesday night. The move comes after Atlanta Public Schools unanimously approved hiring AISD superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen on Monday.

Cruz was part of Carstarphen’s senior cabinet. He is currently the Chief Schools Officer for AISD and provides academic guidance and support for all campuses. It is a position he’s held for the last five years.
Cruz was hired by the district in 2006. Prior to that, he has been an assistant superintendent in Round Rock, San Benito and Kansas City. He was the superintendent of Laredo ISD from 1998 to 2002, and also worked as a deputy commissioner at the Texas Education Agency.
The AISD school board president has said it could take the district up to a year to select a permanent superintendent.
