AUSTIN (KXAN) — A local retailer, known for its quirky toys and novelties, reopened downtown Saturday.
Toy Joy was sold to the highest bidder at a foreclosure auction on March 30. Wild About Music, a music-themed art and gift gallery, acquired all of the assets and property of Toy Joy in the auction.
While Wild About Music doesn’t know how Toy Joy will transform, the owners are hoping to keep the spirit and mission of the company alive, which has been part of Austin since 1987.
“We don’t want to take the fun and the funk and the weirdness out of it,” said Shelley Meyer, co-founder of Wild About Music. “That’s what Toy Joy is.. and so we’re going to work very hard to keep that part in tact and just add additional categories.”
Last month, the previous owners of Toy Joy, Elizabeth Newsome and Trevor Yipp, said financial troubles forced them to close.
Newsome and Yipp will join Wild About Music’s management team, helping lead Toy Joy, and taking on other roles within the company.
“Trevor and Lizzy put the ‘joy’ in Toy Joy,” said Fred Schmidt, Wild About Music CEO. “Their passion for the business is unmistakable – it’s in their heart and soul.”
