AYUTTHAYA, Thailand (NBC/RTV) — Elephants were the main attraction at a water festival that kicked off in Thailand.

A dozen brightly colored elephants were part of a joyous procession on Wednesday in a city about 50 miles north of Bangkok.

The Songkran, or Water Festival, celebrates the traditional new year in Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

Statues of Buddha are washed during the celebration.

Water fights are also part of the festival, and the elephants did their share of dousing people with water.

The festival is one of the top tourist events in Thailand.
