MIYAZAKI, Japan (NBC/EBU) — It’s a story that might make your mouth water: A pair of fully ripe mangoes fetched nearly $3,000 at an auction in Southwest Japan this week.

The mangoes were sold under the brand name “Egg of the Sun” for 300,000 Yen. That’s about $2,940.

The brand is one of the highest-quality mangoes and is certified for size and sweetness of the fruit.

The local Agricultural Federation said this year’s sunny weather led to higher yields of good-quality mangoes.

The wholesaler who placed the record bid said he wanted to uphold the value of the “Egg of the Sun” brand and promote Miyazaki, where the auction happened.
