Final preparations under way for Fort Hood memorial ceremony

Ft. Hood Memorial Ceremony

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A week after the deadly shooting at Fort Hood left three soldiers dead and injured 16 others, President Obama, the First Lady and victims’ families will honor those killed and injured at a memorial ceremony at Sadowski Field.

Military investigators said Ivan Lopez opened fire on post, killing Sgt. Danny Ferguson, Sgt. Carlos A. Lazaney-Rodriguez and Sgt. Timothy Owens. He also injured 16 others before turning the gun on himself.

According to White House officials, Obama will give a speech paying tribute to the victims. This is the second time the president has attended a memorial ceremony at Fort Hood in five years.

Back in 2009, Army Psychiatrist Nidal Hasan killed 13 people and injured 32 others.

“It is true that the president has attended ceremonies and services of this nature in the past far too often, but they never become routine. The pain of the family members who lost loved ones is not routine,” Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, said. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
