AUSTIN (KXAN) — Students at Widen Elementary School in Southeast Austin were asked to ‘shelter in place’ while police searched for a man who fled from authorities during a traffic stop in Bastrop County.

Department of Public Safety troopers stopped the 28-year-old Hispanic man about 1 p.m. for speeding along Farm-to-Market 1441. As the officer was speaking with driver, the man sped off.

The car chase ended after the man drove down a trail at Dove Springs Park and then stopped in a wooded area before taking off on foot.

DPS, Austin Police, and Travis County Sheriff’s officers suspended their search for the man about 3 p.m., but say the suspect is still on foot and may be in the McKinney Falls State Park area.

It was not immediately clear why the man fled from authorities. Police do not believe he is armed.

The “shelter in place’ order was also lifted around 3 p.m. Shelter in place means the exterior doors are locked, but students are still allowed to move within the building.
