Trash piling up along Southwest Parkway

Austin (KXAN) — From beer cans to paint cans the trash along Southwest Parkway is adding up and on Saturday morning volunteers are needed to help get it picked up.

Commuters who take the road may not see the trash when they are driving down the parkway but upon a closer look, tires have been dumped along with old paint cans.

Trash has been tossed out of cars or even blown out of the back of pickup trucks.

“We see tires, hard hats, Christmas ornaments, bottles, liquor bottles, we also see a lot of refuge from landscape companies because it blows off the back of their truck,” said Pamela Yeamans, Lead Volunteer for Cleanup.

Because this roadway runs through the four thousand acre Barton Creek Habitat Preserve they are sponsoring a cleanup on Saturday.

Some who live and bike in the area believe the increase in construction on the land surrounding the road has led to the increase in trash.

The cleanup is Saturday from 9a.m. until noon.

For more information check out the Cleanup Southwest Parkway Facebook page.

Those wishing to volunteer can contact Pamela Yeamans at (512) 748- 5611 or pamelayeamans@gmail.com.

Organizers will provide volunteers safety vests and gloves.

And because cars travel fast along Southwest Parkway volunteers will drive in the far right lane to slow down traffic.
