SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — After more than a decade of serving as head of the San Marcos Police Department, Police Chief Howard Williams will retire on August 1.

Williams joined the San Marcos Police Department on July 21, 2003 and guided the department through a period of great growth, from a budget of $7.7 million and 109 employees in 2003 to $13.3 million and 141 employees today

“It has been an honor to serve the people of San Marcos,” Chief Williams said. “I have been privileged to work with a stellar group of dedicated officers and staff and elected officials who have supported our department and helped us to grow and improve. I fell in love with San Marcos when I arrived in 1975 to attend the University.  It has become my adopted hometown, and I could not be more pleased than to retire here.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
