AUSTIN (KXAN) — Five men were honored for each contributing over 80 gallons of blood and platelets throughout their years of donation.

According to a statement released by the Blood Center of Central Texas, the men said they began making blood donations to do something meaningful that would help others – not for the notoriety or to set a record. Leon Wegele leads the group with over 85 gallons of blood/platelets donations followed by Robert Schluter, Gary Carter Bruce Latour and David Anthony.

All of the men began donating in the late 70s or early 80s by donating whole blood and transitioned to apheresis platelet donations when that technology became available.
