AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Independent School District officials say a mix-up led to students’ social security numbers mistakenly being posted up in the school building.

A release from the district said rosters for end of course testing at Bowie High School in Southwest Austin inadvertently included the names and social security numbers of about 1,300 students.

Those lists were near the library and in a the fine arts area on Friday.

The district say those posting were removed Monday after it was brought to the attention of administrators.

District officials initially said the social security numbers were posted online, but now say that is incorrect. The numbers were only displayed inside the school.

A letter sent to parents Monday said the information was not put up on any social media venue either. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
