Parents, AISD Police Chief will meet to discuss gun found on MS campus

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Parents will meet with the Austin ISD Police Chief on Tuesday to discuss the loaded gun that was found under a portable building on the Webb Middle School campus on Monday.

School administrators contacted AISD Police shortly before 10 a.m. after they received tips from students that a classmate had brought a gun to campus, AISD Police Chief Eric Mendez said.

Authorities spoke with student in question but did not find a weapon.

Using information given to them by students, police and a K-9 unit searched the campus and found a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol under the portable about 2 p.m., Mendez said. He added that there were five rounds loaded into gun, but no bullet in the chamber.

Police believe the student they questioned was the one who brought the weapon, but charges have yet to be filed.

“We’re still investigating exactly the purpose of the gun being on campus and confirming which student brought it onto campus,” said Mendez. “We have an idea of which student it was, but we still have investigations to do and people to interview to determine exactly why a student would bring a gun onto campus.”

Webb Middle School houses students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade.

“They need to get more security, police and personnel,” said parent Rebecca Avila. “We see so many things happening in school these days.”

“It just really breaks my heart cause we have good children and really good students,” said Rhonda Bradford, whose 11-year-old daughter goes to the school.
