Lustre Pearl closes its doors

People party one last time at the Lustre Pearl bar.

Austin (KXAN)- A bar that helped transform a neighborhood in downtown Austin closed for good Sunday night.

The Lustre Pearl held a goodbye party all day. It was the first bar to open on Rainey Street, just south of Cesar Chavez.

But, just as the neighborhood transformed from residential to entertainment, the area is changing again.

High rise condominiums are going to be built in the area. The land the Lustre Pearl sits on will become an eight story condo complex.

One bar employee called the moment bittersweet.

“I was welcomed in and felt like family since day one,” said Kent Barrow. “It’s been a great honor to work with these guys but it was also sad to see it go.”

There are plans to reopen the bar in a new location. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
