Inmate captured after escaping, leading police on chase

DEL VALLE, Texas (KXAN) — An inmate overpowered a maintenance worker at the Travis County Correctional Complex and took off in his truck, then led police on a chase through a Del Valle neighborhood Thursday.

Edmond Henry, 42, drove away from the complex shortly after 7 a.m. on Farm to Market 973 and was seen running a red light by an off-duty Bastrop County Sheriff’s deputy at State Highway 71.

Henry led the officer on a chase through a neighborhood before crashing the truck into a utility pole at Terry Lane and Meldrum Road. He ran from the site and was captured by Travis County Sheriff’s deputies in the 2800 block of State Highway 71 at 7:30 a.m.

He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries from the crash and was placed back into custody.

Henry had only been in jail for a few weeks. He was arrested March 6 by Austin police officers for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest.

New charges include escape while arrested, a third-degree felony, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a state jail felony.
