AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman woke up Friday to the scariest of nightmares. A strange man was in her bedroom with his hands around her throat while her two children were also in the home.
Court documents say the woman was dragged out of bed, that the man hit her head against a tile floor, and then sexually assaulted her before leaving with her television.
But it is what was left behind the resulted in an arrest.
“There was a phone left in the apartment and the victim said it did not belong to her,” said Sgt. Jason Staniszewski with the Austin Police Department Sex Crimes Division.
Police say the phone belonged to 22-year-old Dontel Fuller based on fingerprints taken from the phone and the apartment’s sliding glass door.
The attack occurred in the 1200 block of Camino La Costa and in a neighborhood where Fuller lives. He is also suspected in an attempted sexual assault that happened earlier in the month.
On March 1, a woman reported being pushed up against the wall in a laundry room as her attacker tried to assault her. Police say surveillance video from the incident appears to show Fuller coming to and leaving the apartment complex. The complex is located across the street from where the most recent attack happened.
Staniszewski said three incident reports in the area within the last year are now tied to Fuller.
“Not necessarily the same type of crime, but I would say they were all sexually based.”
Fuller is charged with burglary with intent to commit a felony. The charge is a 1st degree felony, higher than a 2nd degree which would come with a sexual assault charge.
Charges are also being considered for the March 1 incident.
