Storks celebrate 12-year, long-distance love

BRODSKI VAROS, Croatia (NBC/EBU) — Here’s a lesson in true love from two storks in southeastern Croatia.

These two love birds reunited Monday, and they’re celebrating their 12th anniversary.

Every year, the male stork named Klepetan makes the journey from his winter home in South Africa to join his handicapped love Malena in Croatia.

Malena has a broken wing and can’t fly. She stays in this Croatian village and awaits the return of her beloved Klepetan every spring.

Throughout the years, the couple has even raised baby birds together.

Their love story has traveled the world, and the storks have their own postcard. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
