Former Austin police detective faces grand jury after deadly shooting

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A Travis County Grand Jury heard from a former Austin Police detective who shot and killed a man last summer.

Det. Charles Kleinert spent several hours in the grand jury room on Tuesday.

As he was leaving the courthouse, a couple of men walking out with him did everything they could to prevent KXAN’s photojournalist from getting video of Kleinert.

They kept trying to get between Kleinert and our camera and, at one point, one of them bumped into our KXAN photojournalist (Watch the video in the player above).

Kleinert’s lawyer apologized later for their behavior and said it wouldn’t happen again.

Last July, Kleinert shot and killed Larry Jackson Jr. while Kleinert was investigating a bank robbery. The grand jury will decide whether Kleinert will face criminal charges.

He retired from the force after the shooting.
