AUSTIN (KXAN) — SXSW Cares members met Friday morning to decide how to distribute the funds raised after a car barreled through crowds of people during South by Southwest.

Members from Austin Community Foundation, South by Southwest, The Mohawk, Austin Police Department Victims Unit, and the American Red Cross attended the meeting. MariBen Ramsey, the vice president of Austin Community Foundation, said APD Victims Services is working directly with the victims of the crash and they are in the process of providing victims with an initial distribution of the more than $50,000 raised.

APD Victims Unit, Austin Community Foundation and the American Red Cross will determine if additional distributions are needed based on the victims’ needs. Ramsey said the organization is also working with the Texas Attorney General’s Office to assist victims in applying for financial benefits through the Crime Victims’ Compensation program.

The SXSW Cares Fund will cover the expenses the compensation program doesn’t cover, or help cover greater expenses. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
