AUSTIN (AP/KXAN) — It’s graduation day at the Texas Department of Public Safety for two new canine teams.

The dogs passed a multi-week training program and will join 41 other DPS teams stationed throughout Texas. Both teams are to be certified in Friday ceremonies at DPS headquarters in Austin.

“We are looking for a dog that is very bold. They are not scared of new environments, new things, or new odors,” Captain Justin Chrane said. “They have to be very inquisitive, and have a true drive to want to play all the time.”

Both dogs, Bodi and Ilke, are Belgian Malinois and were acquired from the U.S. Department of Defense.

One of the canine teams will be devoted to detection of hidden explosives; the other will focus on detection of illicit drugs.
