Red River Street, Ninth through 12th streets, and entrances to the streets from I-35 were closed for the morning rush hour Thursday while police continued to investigate the deadly crash that killed and man and a woman and hurt 23 others after a driver plowed through a barricade and into a packed street full of people in town for the South by Southwest festival.

Eighth and Ninth streets from the I-35 frontage road to Neches Street were shut down starting at 5 p.m. Access along the frontage roads will not be affected and will remain open.

The closure is expected to last through the evening to ensure public safety during large events in that area, the city said.

The city of Austin will also close several exits on I-35 beginning at 10 a.m. for the second day due to SXSW traffic downtown.
