TxDOT targets segways to stop drinking and driving

AUSTIN (KXAN) — In an effort to reach young people, the Texas Department of Transportation is using a new technique to curb drinkers from getting behind the wheel.

TxDOT officials are going to have people on Segways travel downtown and pass out information to South By Southwest party-goers. It’s launching its statewide campaign called “DWI Hangovers Don’t Go Away.”

Agency officials said they’ve seen a 23 percent increase in Spring Break deaths. It said there were 35,148 DWI-alcohol crashes in Texas that resulted in 8,702 serious injuries and 1,022 deaths.

In 2013, there were 25,158 DWI-alcohol crashes in Texas that resulted in 8,702 serious injuries and 1,022 deaths.  Most of the c rashes involved someone between the ages of 17 and 34 years old.
