AUSTIN (KXAN) — Trying to get a hotel room during South by Southwest and other big events isn’t easy. But what about for Austinite’s planning their own events in town? Many hotels are sold out through the weekend.
With more big events coming to Austin, planning things like graduation parties and weddings is getting harder.
For Becky Brock and Henry Uribe, planning weddings around big events isn’t easy.
“You want to check the calendar in Austin and do a thorough sweep of that before committing to a date so you don’t get in a situation you can’t get out of,” Brock said.”
The two help people plan everything from weddings to milestone celebrations. “And we actually guide clients away from those weekends because we want to make sure we don’t have tons of traffic and no hotel availability for them during their fun celebrations.”
“Never in a million years,” one women replied after being asked if she would ever consider planning an event during SXSW.
“In addition to just coming here for leisure and visiting, which is what a lot of people are doing, they’re planning their trips around events and staying longer, either before or after events,” said Shilpa Bakre with the Austin Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
That just piles on to the already heavy traffic issues the city experiences.
“What it does is it basically creates ‘X’ number of weekends in Austin for weddings and parties, and those weddings are in high demand,” said Brock.
The Convention and Visitors Bureau says more than 300,000 people attend SXSW and the festival generates more than $200 million dollars for the city.
