AUSTIN (KXAN) — With more than 70,000 people in town for South by Southwest, many out-of-town guests are falling in love with Austin.
The allure of Austin has realtors advertising to people about how they can be part of it all. Now, a picture of a realtor advertising on Sixth Street is now making its rounds on social media sites.
Austin realtor, Gay Puckett, says the phones at her offices at JBGoodwin Realtors have been ringing off the hook from SXSW visitors looking to become locals.
“It’s probably about 200 people a day are calling and 1,000 people a day are going to our website everyday,” said Puckett. “The housing is cheap, the taxes are low, the entertainment is amazing.”
Bruce and Jane Mullkoff say after visiting the city they couldn’t resist moving just three weeks ago.
“I visited my daughter here five times in the last two years,” Jane said, “and I told my husband if there is a possibility of us moving here we should come here.”
The job market is one of the many things during SXSW that is attracting people to not just visit. The most recent unemployment rate in Austin for January was at 4.7 percent below the state average of 5.7 percent and the national average of more than 6 percent.
Whether its the music, the cost of living, or the weather, everyone has their reasons to move to the city.
“There’s just so much going on and there is so much for us to do,” said Jane. “I’m not really ready to go the retirement home I want to stay with the young people.”
But some current Austin residents aren’t too thrilled about the discovery of this hidden jewel.
“[My husband] is used to walking into restaurants, and being seated immediately, not waiting 30 minutes, or pay $40 for parking,” said Austin local Jocelyn Williams.
But Puckett says there’s something for everyone to gain by living in Austin.
“Enjoy the fact that your property values are going up, and enjoy the fact that you live in the coolest city in the nation,” said Puckett.
